Moab Support Forum > When to apply Desert Varnish

Just wondering when is the best time to apply Moab Desert Varnish. Is it best to apply it after all outgassing has occurred?

Thank you,

You'll definitely need to wait for the outgassing. Here's a video that should answer all your questions:

Canon support informed me there was no need to need for a protective spray on Canons pro 1000 when using pigment inks because the printer lays down a layer of protection on top of the print. Anyone with more information on this? they say their dye ink printers don't do this and do need the spray for better protection.

The Desert Varnish is for matte black papers, when they won't be framed, laminated, or otherwise protected from the environment.

The Chroma Optimizer in the Canon PRO inkset is only used on photo black papers, and is not a protectant against UV, humidity, or other environmental factors. CO is used to prevent gloss differential and bronzing.

Both dye and pigment inks are affected by environmental factors, and protective sprays such as Desert Varnish are recommended for matte papers when they will be handled, included in portfolios or books, or otherwise exposed to the elements.
